Practical information

Rjukan – A gateway to adventure 🏔

Located at the foot of majestic Gaustatoppen, Rjukan stands as the gateway to Hardangervidda, one of Europe’s largest and most pristine national parks. This dramatic mountain region offers endless possibilities for adventure throughout the year — from steep icefalls and alpine summits to mountain lakes and vast highland plateaus.

Whether you’re drawn to ice climbing, mountaineering, ski touring, paddling, hiking, or simply immersing yourself in unspoiled wilderness, this area delivers world-class conditions in every season.

We offer guided adventures not only in Rjukan itself but also across the surrounding valleys and highlands, stretching west toward the wild heart of Hardangervidda and north into remote alpine terrain. Each trip is designed to match your goals — whether that’s skill development, training for a greater expedition, or simply experiencing the best of Norwegian nature.

Seasons and conditions ☀️

Rjukan enjoys exceptional year-round conditions for mountain sports.
  • Winter: From December to March, Rjukan is world-famous for its reliable ice climbing, offering hundreds of routes ranging from beginner-friendly icefalls to long, technical lines in dramatic canyons. The surrounding mountains provide perfect conditions for ski touring, snowshoeing, and winter mountaineering.
  • Spring and summer: As the snow melts, Hardangervidda transforms into a vast network of trails, ridges, rivers, and cliffs, ideal for rock climbing, trekking, and multi-day expeditions. The area is also a paradise for kayaking, fishing, and wilderness camping.
The microclimate of Rjukan valley provides cold, stable winters and mild summers — making it one of Norway’s most versatile outdoor destinations.

How to get here 🗺

Most major airlines fly to Oslo Gardermoen Airport (OSL), located about 220 km from Rjukan — roughly a 3.5-hour drive through beautiful mountain scenery. Public transport is available, but if you plan to explore the Rjukan area or visit several climbing and hiking locations, renting a car is by far the most practical option.

If you prefer to travel by public transport, you can take a train to Kongsberg (Vy rail services), and continue by bus via Notodden to Rjukan. Travel information, timetables, and ticket booking are available on entur.no and vy.no.

Driving from Oslo, take the E18 towards Drammen, then Rv40 through Kongsberg. In winter, check weather and road status before you travel — mountain roads can be icy, and winter tires are mandatory from November to April.

If you arrive at Torp Sandefjord Airport (TRF), the distance is roughly the same — about 3.5 hours by car.
Rental cars are available at both airports, and free parking is available in Rjukan town centre and near most meeting points for our guided activities.Rjukan

Local shuttle service 🚌

Rjukan Adventure offers a local shuttle service for guests without their own transport. The service can be arranged for pick-up and drop-off at accommodations, climbing areas, or meeting points on request.
Pricing varies depending on distance and location — please contact us for details or to book in advance.
